What kind of dentist should I see for veneers in Korea?

Short answer

See a licensed dentist who will personally diagnose, design and bond your veneers, and who can explain in your language how much of each tooth must be reduced. Korea has no "cosmetic dentist" specialty, so look past titles to their veneer training, an in-house ceramic lab, a no-prep assessment and whether orthodontics is considered first.

The short answer: the dentist who does the whole case

The dentist to see for veneers in Korea is the one who will examine you, design your smile, try the veneers in and bond them — personally. Veneers are a design job as much as a clinical one, and every hand-off between a consulting dentist, a treating dentist and an outside lab is a place where your preferences can get lost. On a short trip, that continuity matters even more.

Ask directly at the consultation: "Will you be the dentist bonding my veneers?" A clear yes is the first qualification.

Meet the dentist who treats you — in English

Dr. Young-kyung Kim, Founder & Clinical Director of Smile Studios Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul

At Smile Studios, that dentist is Dr. Young-kyung Kim, Founder & Clinical Director. She spent her childhood in Los Angeles and consults in fluent English herself — no interpreter between you and the person designing your smile. She examines you, plans the veneers, checks the try-in and bonds them.

Does Korea have a "cosmetic dentist" specialty?

No. Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare certifies dental specialists in eleven fields — including prosthodontics, orthodontics, conservative dentistry and periodontics — but "cosmetic" or "esthetic dentistry" is not one of them. Any licensed dentist may place veneers, so a title alone doesn't tell you who is good at them.

FieldHow it relates to veneers
ProsthodonticsCrowns, bridges and ceramic restorations, including veneers
OrthodonticsMoves teeth into place — sometimes the alternative to veneers, or the step that makes no-prep possible
Conservative dentistryFillings and direct resin (composite) work
PeriodonticsGum health and gum line shape, which frame the veneers
Esthetic dentistryAn academic society and training field, not a certified specialty

What this means in practice: check what the dentist has actually trained in for veneers and smile design, and whether they can tell you when veneers are not the right answer.

The qualifications that matter for veneers

Check before you book

Licensed dentist who treats you from diagnosis to bonding, Specific veneer training (no-prep, ceramics, smile design), Explains how much each tooth would be reduced, and why, Assesses no-prep or minimal-prep first, Works with a ceramist — ideally in-house, Offers a try-in before final bonding, Can say when orthodontics is the better first step, Explains the plan in your language, directlyLicensed dentist who treats youfrom diagnosis to bondingSpecific veneer training (no-prep,ceramics, smile design)Explains how much each tooth wouldbe reduced, and whyAssesses no-prep or minimal-prepfirstWorks with a ceramist — ideallyin-houseOffers a try-in before finalbondingCan say when orthodontics is thebetter first stepExplains the plan in your language, directly

The last point is easy to overlook. If the dentist can only reach you through an interpreter or front-desk staff, the nuance of "slightly longer, a little less white" is translated twice before it reaches the ceramist. Being able to talk to the treating dentist directly — in English or your own language — is part of the treatment, not a convenience. More on that in finding an English-speaking dentist in Seoul.

Before your consultation

Bring clear photos of your smile (front, both sides, and a relaxed close-up), a note of what you'd like to change, and any dental records you have. If you’re still comparing clinics, use our stage-by-stage checklist for vetting a veneer clinic in Korea, or see choosing a veneer clinic in Gangnam for the questions to ask everywhere. Whether no-prep is possible, and how many teeth to treat, is decided only after an in-person examination.

When you're ready, send us photos of your smile.
